On November 20, 2025, a Philippine Regional Trial Court sentenced Alice Guo, or to use her Chinese birth name Guo Huaping, to life imprisonment for human trafficking. This verdict marked the end of one of the most audacious infiltrations of a Southeast Asian political system by a transnational criminal syndicate.
Guo, who successfully masqueraded as a Philippine mayor while overseeing an industrial-scale torture and fraud complex, was convicted alongside seven co-accused for facilitating the enslavement of over 700 individuals within the Baofu Land Development compound in Bamban, Tarlac.
Her sentencing, however, is not an isolated event. It is the latest in a series of recent moves that has left analysts wondering whether this could be a sustained push to drive out the scam compounds.
